In the United States there is a wide spread epidemic of childhood obesity. Diseases typically seen
in adults such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease are now being found in children.
There is an estimated cost of 147 billion dollars in health care cost due to childhood obesity each
year. Heart and Soul has made it our mission to be a leading organization in the fight to end
childhood obesity, as well as supply the at risk youth in our communities not “just” a pair of shoes, but
one of the building blocks to begin restoring their self esteem to become better students and future
The Partnership for a healthier America has cast a much-needed light upon the problem of childhood
obesity and Heart and Soul Community Services, Inc. has answered the call to action. Join Heart and
Soul Community Services in our efforts to have our youth “Get Back In the Game!” Join us in raising
funds to supply at risk, homeless and financially challenged youth with new athletic shoes. With the
new shoes that these youth will receive they in fact will be able to “Get Back in the Game!”
The First Lady has implemented the “Lets Move Campaign” for children of the United States of
America to get moving and infuse exercise into their daily lives while also focusing on proper nutrition.
In order to participate in physical education classes while in school and in after school sports
programs children in our communities need proper footwear. Each school year over half the schools
population at Title One Schools begin the school year with torn, tattered or shoes handed down from
older siblings. As a Marathoner, you will be helping to raise thousands of dollars to supply the at risk
youth in our communities not “just” a pair of shoes, but one of the building blocks to begin restoring
their self esteem to become better students and future community leaders.
Heart and Soul Community Services provides at risk youth with supplemental nutrition, clothing, and
academic supplies which focuses on a child’s physical needs in order for that child to then focus all
energies on excelling academically and interpersonally. Your participation in the Honolulu Marathon
will help raise funds needed to continue to provide these vital services. You will directly impact the
lives of hundreds of people.
The athletic shoes obtained in this fundraising effort will get our youth “Back in
the Game” of exercising daily as well as “Back in the Game” of life free of disease.
Heart and Soul programs including the “Get Back in the Game” program is funded through donations
from individuals, corporations, foundations and special events like the marathon-training program.
